Traditionally SANs have been used for Cloud environments but now Integrated Storage is leaving them in the past and in the dust.
Integrated Storage functionality allows us to build a highly scalable and resilient target for virtual server storage using local disks in our Hypervisors.
Using the Integrated Storage, we can create a virtual data store on our Cloud that spans multiple physical drives in Hypervisors, with RAID-like replication and striping across drives and devices.
The solution is fully integrated into the Compute resource platform, and the platform is completely decentralized: each node is capable of making decisions about data synchronization and load balancing, and communicates directly with other nodes to move content around dynamically without depending on any centralised controller.
There is no single point of failure: for example, if a Compute resource fails, the Storage Array reorganises itself and automatically recovers the data. The reliability translates to the Fluccs 100% Cloud uptime guarantee
Integrated Storage features our VM-aware technology, which optimises storage throughput for virtual machines in our cloud.
VM-aware technology means the system knows which physical disk, on which Hypervisor, holds a copy of data belonging to a specific virtual machine.
The Integrated Storage uses this information to store VM data close to the VM that needs it: a copy is always held locally to the virtual machine, on a disk in the same Hypervisor.
This contributes to Integrated Storage’s high throughput for cloud workloads. With Integrated Storage we can realise up to 95% of the raw performance of disks attached to the system.
This patent pending “smart disk” technology is a paradigm shift from centralized SAN controller disk management. Under the Integrated Storage each physical disk in the distributed storage is a self-contained unit capable of discovering its own resiliency attributes and can self-enable features like load balancing and synchronisation with other physical drives.
As a result, physical drives can be transported and installed across Hypervisors without losing data or requiring a RAID rebuild. Furthermore, the system is totally self-healing since it tracks where data is across each physical drive and can re-build vdisk data stores should data corruption or a mechanical failure occur on one of the physical drives.
